The kitchen is the heart of the modern home. The problem is that we’re often trying to cook dinner, supervise children’s homework and entertain guests in the same cramped space. Here are a few tips for those who need to know how to make the most out of your kitchen, no matter what kitchen design you’re stuck with.
Before you plan a totally new kitchen design, start getting rid of all the things that start piling up in the kitchen. Get rid of the small appliances you never use. Sort through the food in the pantry and get rid of the expired items. Donate the items you’ll never really eat. You may find cut the amount of storage space you need in half, eliminating the need for a totally new kitchen design. This has the side benefit of reducing how much you have to move and reorganize if you do renovate the kitchen. While you’re at it, organize what is left.
Your new kitchen design doesn’t always require tearing everything out and rebuilding. Nor do you necessarily have to add a ton of new cabinets and shelves. For example, you may free up space and improve accessibility of regularly used items by investing in hanging hooks. Hang pots over the stove, if it doesn’t get in the way of you use the burner. Hang spoons, spatulas and other large utensils over the sink. This has the side benefit of giving them a place to drip dry after you wash them. Consider replacing your current can opener with one mounted under the cabinet.
A kitchen is defined by the presence of a cooktop, oven, refrigerator, and sink. You need an open flow between these key appliances. Unfortunately, we often work next to every single one of them. You probably need more work space next to each. We’ve already mentioned the benefits of getting rid of small appliances and other clutter. However, if there simply isn't enough space between counters and appliances, you need to renovate the kitchen to create wide open aisles.
You could create new work surfaces, too. It might be a butcher block table next to the end of the counter or a countertop installed over freestanding appliances. Remember that this change to the kitchen design should not interfere with the ability to quickly and easily move from stove to sink to kitchen.
You might be able to do more once you install a shelf near the kitchen sink or above the oven, so that you have another place to put large items instead of on the limited counter space. Depending on the items you store in your cupboards and their dimensions, you might be able to add wire shelves inside of the cabinets to store more items on.
Another option is bringing in baker’s shelves. You can use them to hold dishes, small appliances and cooking implements. Some have a wooden work surface on top of them that you can either cut vegetables on or use as a shelf.
